Dry eye is a condition of increasing prevalence which affects twice as many women as men. The symptoms include burning, itching or sore eyes, red and tired eyes and in more severe cases blur and light sensitivity. Gritty and watery eyes are also common symptoms of dry eye.

The symptoms of dry eye are exacerbated by computer use, age, contact lens wear, environment, certain medications and health conditions.

Dry eye results from either an insufficient production of tears or excessive evaporation of the tears. The evaporative form of dry eye is the most common and is due mainly to Meibomian gland dysfunction. The meibomian glands secrete oils that limits evaporation of the tears. In Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) the tears evaporate too quickly, and this leads to symptoms of dry eye.

Anjou and Scalora Optometrists offer a range of treatment options for dry eye including Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Blephasteam.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy for the treatment of dry eye is a new innovative treatment using intense pulsed light to stimulate the meibomian glands and help restore normal tear film structure. IPL treatment for dry eyes is non-invasive, painless, safe and effective in 80% of patients affected by dry eye disease.

Blephasteam is a device that delivers moist heat therapy at a stable temperature and in a controlled environment. Blephasteam has been shown to be effective in the management and treatment of lid disorders and MGD.
