Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is the fitting of specially designed contact lenses to gently reshape the front curvature (cornea) of the eye. OrthoK lenses are worn overnight while you sleep. The aim is to allow patients to see clearly during the day without the use of glasses or contact lenses. The best results are achieved when OrthoK lenses are worn every night.

Unlike surgical procedures, the vision changes with OrthoK are not permanent. OrthoK offers an alternative for patients who are either not ready for surgery, or are still experiencing progression of their correction and are not yet suitable for refractive surgery. OrthoK can correct shortsightedness(myopia), longsightedness(hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia.

OrthoK should also be considered for children. Research has shown that OrthoK can reduce the progression of myopia by up to 50%. This means OrthoK can be used as a method of Myopia Management. The risk of eye disease such as glaucoma and retinal detachment all increase significantly with higher levels of myopia. The younger the child when diagnosed with myopia the more shortsighted they will likely become.
